Reappropriation of Public Space: Istanbul's Independent Performing Arts Scene

  • Kaaistudios: 81 Rue Notre Dame du Sommeil
    1000 Bruxelles

Since the 1990s, Istanbul’s independent theatres have transformed vacant spaces into hubs of creativity and resistance, challenging norms and amplifying marginalized voices. Beyond performance, they reimagine public space, asserting the right to be seen and heard in a rapidly changing city.

From everyday acts to the political resonance of the 2013 Gezi Movement, these theatres continuously carve out space for art and community. This lecture explores their impact and draws parallels with Brussels, asking how cities can be reclaimed through creativity and visibility.
